Don’t Panic
Dunno if you’ve heard about this or not, but there has been a big hullaballo in Portland the last few weeks over changing the name of Interstate Avenue to Cesar Chavex Boulevard. Something similar happened a few months ago when they changed Portland Boulevard to Rosa Parks Way. I didn’t even know it was going to happen until the new street signs were up.
Anyway, when people started raising a big stink about renaming Interstate, the city council decided maybe it was a better idea to rename 4th Ave.
Being directionally challenged (I’m still learning my way around Portland more than a year and half after moving here), I honestly don’t care what they call the street names. I’m still gonna get lost on them, so call them whatever the hell you want.
But this morning, I got an email from a friend that said this:
With all of the hoopla surrounding the proposed rename of a Portland street to honor Cesar Chavez, we at Geek in the City noticed that technology is under-represented in the naming of our city streets.
We have begun a campaign has begun to change the name of 42nd Avenue to Douglas Adams Boulevard. Read more about it at:
Now that is a street renaming I can get behind.
