My man Maher
A few weekends ago, GTB and I were watching CNN. As he got sick of the bad news and reached for the remote, he said, “I know I should pay attention to what’s going on in the world, and that some of my friends would kill me if they heard me say this, but sometimes, I’d rather just stick my head in the sand.” Click! Before you know it, we’re onto the Food Network for a half-day session of vegging while zoning out to that Italian woman with the ginormous breasts.
While I’m always happier staring at the TV when it features a perky combination of pasta and tits, I too feel some guilt when I’m not paying attention to what’s happening in politics, global disease scares, and natural disasters. Which is why I’m an avid watcher of the Daily Show and, when it’s on, Real Time with Bill Maher. Yes, I’m aware that this places me firmly in the cliche of being a Gen Xer who gets her news primarily from satirical, sarcastic, smart-ass journalists. (Which is why I occasionally throw some NPR in there for good measure.)
Do I always agree with what Bill Maher has to say? Of course not. Do I feel silly that I pay so much for cable just so I can watch shit like this? A little. Will it stop me from continuing to feel wiser and more informed when Bill is in season? Nope.
I’m giddy that Real Time starts again tonight. I’m thrilled that this season, I have DVR and can happily go out drinkin’ and catch up with Bill and the gang tomorrow. And I’m comforted to know that when his show is off the air again, I can switch over to watch that Southern woman who uses a pound of butter in every freakin’ recipe.

her breasts aren’t THAT big! but any way, how is it that the venerable convention of TV Cooking shows has been co-opted by the visual vernacular of soft-core porn? Oh yeah, it’s cable. Something that I thought I too could not live without and guess what, I have been for almost three months now. Cigarettes, fried foods and now cable. There are small miracles.

This is a link to perhaps my favorite Maher show. It’s the one about Jeff Gannon the gay escort who was part of the white house press corp under a false name and got all the scoops.
